Frequently asked questions

Why did you start your own practice?

Over the last century, immense consolidation in healthcare has stacked the odds against the type of doctoring we reminisce about: trusted, independent doctors serving communities who they know and who know them.

I’d like to bring back an updated form of this type of doctoring and create a model of care that can survive and thrive in today’s healthcare ecosystem.

Who provides the medical services offered through this practice?

All medical services are provided through my California-licensed professional medical corporation, Michelle-Linh Nguyen, MD, General Doctor, in accordance with California law. As a solo practicing physician, I personally deliver and oversee all aspects of patient care.

Why is the telemedicine-only practice focused on healthcare professionals and their family members?

I am providing telemedicine services for healthcare professionals because I believe that a deeply healthy health workforce is vital to excellent patient care. It allows me to improve patient care for more patients than I can reach alone.

I also have special expertise in the challenges healthcare professionals face in caring for themselves. I understand how hectic healthcare work schedules can be and how difficult it can be to make time for self-care.

I am including family members because the health of an individual is deeply intertwined with that of their family.

Who qualifies as a healthcare professional for your telemedicine services?

By my definition, healthcare professionals are people who directly care for patients. This includes nurses, doctors, pharmacists, medical students, physician and nursing assistants, physical & occupational therapists, etc. If you are not sure whether you qualify, just give me a call and we can talk about it.

What is direct primary care (DPC)?

Direct primary care is a payment model in which a patient pays their physician directly for services without involvement of third-parties, such as insurance companies. Many direct primary care practices charge a monthly subscription fee that covers all care.

Many primary care doctors believe that this payment model allows them more time and flexibility to listen to and care for patients at a high standard.

Does the practice take health insurance?

No, care is based on a monthly fee structure. In order to have flexibility and time to care for my patients in a careful and kind manner, and to fulfill my promise of cost transparency, my practice does not contract with or bill insurance companies. Your health insurance may still be applied to prescription medications, laboratory work, imaging, etc.

If I join the practice, do I still need health insurance?

Yes. While I believe that a more meaningful and accessible relationship with a general doctor will lessen the need for specialty services, in our current healthcare system, it is important to have insurance coverage for complex conditions, procedures, imaging, and hospitalizations that could be expensive and can be covered under insurance plans. Plans that work best with my model include catastrophic plans, high deductible plans, and PPO plans. HMO plans are difficult because they choose a primary care physician for you in their network and usually require prescriptions and referrals to come from that assigned physician.

Can I join the practice if I have Medicare?

Yes, I welcome patients with Medicare, and my practice model is well-suited to handle complex medical issues and medication management.

You will pay the same monthly rate as other patients, and we will both have to sign paperwork stating that I will not bill Medicare for any of my services. You will still be able to bill Medicare for any specialist referrals, imaging, or lab tests.

What sets your practice apart?

I consider myself equal parts physician and patient.

I pair medical and research expertise with humility about what medical science and pharmaceuticals cannot explain and solve.

I am curious.

I have designed my practice around having time to listen and learn.

I have the flexibility to care for people in ways that make sense, whether that means phone appointments, e-mail, or house visits.

I am dedicated to financial transparency. My fees cover my expenses and a reasonable salary that will support my family.

Does the practice offer home visits?

One intake in-person visit (at your home or at another chosen location) is included in my fees. If necessary, additional home visits can be arranged, but they will come with an extra expense (determined by factors like distance and the cost of gas).

Does the practice accept cash payments?

Yes, we accept payments in cash.
